Establishment of Science and Technology Laboratories in Public Secondary Schools

 

Request for Expressions of Interest

 

The MTN Nigeria Foundation Limited by Guarantee (MTNF) was established, by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, in July 2004 to drive MTN Nigeria Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in communities across the country.

 

Project Description and Location

The MTN Foundation Science and Technology Laboratory project is an innovative project designed to upgrade science laboratories for practical teaching of core science subjects (i.e. Chemistry, Physics and Biology) in public secondary schools thereby improving students and teachers’ learning and teaching experience in the sciences.

 

This is the 1st phase of the project planned to be implemented in 24 public secondary schools in 6 States across the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria.

 

Project Objectives

The main objective of the project is to positively Impact the teaching of Science subjects in Nigerian public secondary schools by:

 

  • Improving the science laboratories in selected public secondary schools through:
  • Refurbishment and upgrading of existing infrastructure
  • Provision of laboratory equipment
  • Training of teachers and laboratory attendants

 

  • Enhancing learning through practicals in the teaching of core science subjects

 

  • Augmenting government’s focus on Science and Technology to accelerate socio-economic development

Special Mandatory Requirements

To be considered as a beneficiary of the Science and Technology Laboratory project, each interested State Ministry of Education is expected to do the following:

  • Respond to this advert by nominating 7 eligible secondary schools from the State
  • Present, only secondary schools which have a room large enough to accommodate a maximum of 50 students per laboratory (80 sqm footprint)
  • Ensure that the nominated secondary schools have, at least, 1 teacher in place for each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology; and a attendant.
  • Take responsibility for provision of consumables for the science laboratory after one (1) year of MTNF’s intervention.
  • Sign a 5 year (renewable) Multi-party Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to be executed by the State Ministry of Education, selected Secondary School Management MTN Foundation and the Project Implementing Consultant before implementation of project in the secondary school.

 

MTN Foundation now invites State Ministries of Education across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria who are interested to submit an Expression of Interest for their nominated 7 public secondary schools for consideration. The Expression of Interest must have the following;

 

  • The support and endorsement of the Permanent Secretary and the Honourable Commissioner for Education

 

  • Names and addresses of the secondary schools nominated

 

  • Full names and contact details of the Principal and another officer in each of the nominated secondary schools with decision-making authority (i.e. telephone number(s), e-mail addresses and fax)

 

  • Photographs of the proposed space to implement the Laboratory project in the nominated secondary schools (internal and external view) view).

 

  • Proof that the nominated secondary schools have the required number of science teachers, lab attendants and other support staff for each of the subject areas (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) e.g. letter of appointment or transfer letter; nominal roll showing the staff listing etc.

 

  • Availability of an alternate lab -attendant or a signed undertaking to employ a staff who will under-study the Lab Attendant to ensure continuity in the event of transfer or resignation of the Laboratory Attendant.

 

  • A detailed road map to the nominated secondary schools using popular landmarks in the relevant city for site verification visits to shortlisted schools.

 

Next Steps

On receipt of the Expressions of interest from interested State Ministries of Education, the MTNF shall evaluate and shortlist qualifying public secondary schools for further consideration.  Only a maximum of 4 secondary schools per state will be selected as recipients of the Science and Technology Laboratory project for successful States.

 

Application Process

Interested State Ministries of Education across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria should send their applications in sealed envelopes to the address below clearly marked (on the envelopes) “Expression of Interest- MTN Foundation Science and Technology Laboratory Project.” All applications must be received on or before Friday, 27th May 2011.

 

Please note that interested secondary schools which meet the above stated criteria should approach their State Ministries of Education to nominate them for this project. DIRECT APPLICATIONS FROM SECONDARY SCHOOLS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
